Univar Solutions offers a full line of straight chain primary fatty alcohols, from as few as 8 carbons to as many as 22 as well as custom blends. They are commonly referred to as Short Chain (Carbon Chain < 10), Mid-Cut, and Long Chain (Carbon Chain > 18). Natural fatty alcohols are derived from natural fats and oils by hydrogenating the corresponding fatty methyl ester and subsequent fractionation. Natural fatty alcohols have an even number of carbon atoms with a single functional alcohol group (-OH) attached at the first carbon. Synthetic fatty alcohols are produced from ethylene using the Ziegler reaction, which yields a chemically identical linear primary alcohol with an even numbered carbon chain.
