Solvents

Solvents are essential and versatile substances used in various industries and applications and are the backbone of many chemical processes. They are liquids capable of dissolving, diluting or dispersing other substances, making them invaluable in processes like manufacturing, cleaning and formulation.  Solvents play a fundamental role in creating solutions, suspensions, and dispersions.

Solvents like water are the backbone for many chemical processes. Capable of dissolving, diluting, or dispersing other substances, solvents are invaluable in cleaning, formulation, and manufacturing processes. Choosing the right solvent depends on compatibility with other substances and intended application. Common uses include adhesives, agrochemicals, solvent cleaners and degreasers, coatings and paint solvents, cosmetics and personal care, electronics, sealants, pharmaceuticals, polymer processing, and printing with eco solvent inks. With purity, safety, and efficiency to consider, you can trust the quality of our solvents and rely on us as your partner for accurate, on-time service and supply chain expertise. A global distributor with long-standing supplier relationships, Univar Solutions offers high-purity solvents for chemical manufacturing, homecare cleaning and industrial cleaning, food manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and water treatment. We can source even the most in-demand solvents when others may have limited quantities. Find your expansive range of essential chemicals and green solvents here.

Aliphatic Hydrocarbons

An aliphatic hydrocarbon or aliphatic compound is an organic compound composed of carbon and hydrogen. It is obtained by the chemical degradation of fats or oils that contain hydrogen and carbon atoms.

Most aliphatic hydrocarbons are flammable. The compounds are used as fuels, lubricants, raw materials for producing fibers, industrial chemicals, plastics, rubbers, solvents, and other products.

Glycol Ethers

Glycol ethers are mainly used as solvents. They are derived from either ethylene oxide (E series) or propylene oxide (P series) combined with alcohol;

E series – excellent solvency, chemical stability, and compatibility with water and a number of organic solvents make them useful as chemical intermediates and in a broad array of applications, including cosmetics, cleaners, and textiles.

P series – used in protective coatings for industrial, automotive, household cleaning, and architectural applications; they also offer an extensive combination of physical and performance properties for formulations in a wide range of cleaning applications.

Glycols

Glycol, also called diol, is a chemical compound with many subcategories. It’s part of the organic compounds that belong to the alcohol family.

The simplest member of the class is ethylene glycol, a popular antifreeze due to its heat transfer properties.

It could be used in automobile systems, as a coolant in automotive radiators, and as antifreeze in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning). Additionally, ethylene glycol could be used as an ingredient in paint solvents and printing inks. It is also used as a reagent in making alkyd resins, explosives, polyesters, and synthetic waxes.

Another popular glycol is Propylene glycol, also known as 1,2-propanediol. It works as a moisture-retaining agent, preservative, and solvent. It is not toxic and can be used in cosmetics, foods, and hygiene products.

Ketones

In organic chemistry, a ketone is an organic compound with the structure R₂C=O, where R can be a variety of carbon-containing substituents. Combined with other functional groups, ketone and aldehydes are widespread in nature. They are also known as methanoyl or formyl group, and are very common and essential in biology and industry.

The simplest ketone is acetone, with the formula CH₃CCH₃, which is an excellent solvent for plastics and synthetic fibers.

Ketones are also used in household products, medicine, the production of nylon, plastics, paint remover, paraffin wax, textiles, varnishes, and more.
